Schefflera alpina ‘Mountain Gem’, is a select cultivar of the hardy Schefflera alpina, with glossy, dark green palmate leaves (often with red stems when young) and a compact, upright habit.
Origin
- The basic species Schefflera alpina is native to northern Vietnam (mountains at an altitude of 2600–3000 meters) and parts of southern China; adapted to cool, moist mountain forests.
- The cultivar ‘Mountain Gem’ is a modern Dutch selection introduced in recent years as an improved, more compact and attractive form for gardens and container plants.
- Endemic to subtropical mountain regions with high humidity and well-drained soils; one of the hardest Schefflera species.
Care
- Grows as an upright, evergreen shrub or small tree up to 2–4 metres high (often 1.5–3 m in cultivation) and wide; palm-shaped leaves with 7–9 shiny, dark green leaflets (young leaves often reddish).
- Prefers partial shade to shade (protected from bright midday sun); Full sun can scorch leaves in hot summers.
- Plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil (slightly acidic to neutral, rich in leaf compost); Add mulch to retain moisture.
- Watering: regular in growing season (spring/summer) to keep soil moist; moderate in winter; does not tolerate dehydration or wet feet (root rot risk).
- Winter hardiness: fairly good (USDA zones 8–10); tolerates frost down to about -10 to -12 °C (sometimes down to -15 °C with protection); in colder climates (such as the Netherlands), apply mulch, use fleece or overwinter frost-free as a container plant (cool but frost-free, 0–10 °C, light spot).
- Fertilization: light organic or slow-release manure during the growing season; Do not over-fertilize.
- Pruning: light in spring to maintain shape or make it bushier; tolerates pruning well.
Usage
- Mainly ornamental plant (ornamental): prized for large, exotic, glossy leaves and tropical/jungle appearance; Perfect as an accent in shade gardens, exotic borders, patios or as a container plant.
- Combines well with ferns, hostas, rhododendrons and other large foliage plants; Provides structure in semi-shaded areas.
