Jacaranda mimosifolia, also known as rosewood tree, blue jacaranda or Brazilian rosewood, is a spectacular ornamental tree with purple-blue flowers and fern-like foliage.

Origin

  • Occurs naturally in south-central South America, especially northwestern Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and parts of southern Brazil and Uruguay.
  • Grows in subtropical and tropical regions, often at the foot of mountain forests, in moist valleys and open forests on well-drained soils.
  • Belongs to the Bignoniaceae family; endemic to this region, but now imported worldwide and cultivated in warm climates.

Care

  • Grows as a semi-evergreen or deciduous tree up to 8 meters high, young plants often only flower after 5 years.
  • Prefers full sun (at least 6–8 hours of direct light per day) for the best flowering; Open, warm location protected from strong winds.
  • Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (sandy-loamy, pH 6.0–7.5); Avoid heavy clay or wet feet (root rot risk).
  • Watering: regularly during establishment and growing season (spring/summer); moderate thereafter (drought-tolerant if established); Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soaked.
  • Winter hardiness: limited (USDA zones 9b–11); tolerates light frost up to about -5 to -8 °C for a short time; in colder climates (such as the Netherlands) grow as a container plant and overwinter frost-free (at least 5–10 °C, light spot indoors).
  • Fertilization: in the growing season (spring/summer) a balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks; Avoid too much nitrogen (promotes leaf growth at the expense of flowers).
  • Pruning: light after flowering or in spring to retain shape; Heavy pruning can encourage regrowth, but it is better not to prune young trees too much.

Usage

  • Mainly ornamental plant : cultivated for its spectacular lavender-blue to purple flowers in large panicles (spring/summer), which cover the ground with a blue “carpet”; Ideal as an avenue tree, solitary in gardens, parks or streets.
  • Shade tree: provides dense shade with fern-like leaves; Popular in urban landscapes and gardens with a tropical atmosphere.
