Description

Kaempferia rotunda, also known as peacock ginger or round-rooted galangal, is a striking and ornamental plant that belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). This plant is especially valued for its beautiful leaves and delicate flowers.

The leaves of Kaempferia rotunda are elongated and have a striking pattern of silver and green hues, often with purple undersides. This gives the plant a decorative appearance, even when it is not in bloom.
The plant produces beautiful, purple-white flowers that emerge from the ground, often before the leaves appear. The flowers are short-lived but very striking.
Like other gingers, Kaempferia rotunda has a rhizomatous root system, which means that it has underground rootstocks from which new shoots grow.

The plant is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as India, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
For its ornamental value, the plant is now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of Central and South America, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Kaempferia rotunda is primarily valued as an ornamental plant for its decorative leaves and flowers. It is often used in shady gardens, as a ground cover, or in pots.
In some cultures, the rhizomes and leaves are used in traditional medicine for their supposed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
Although less well known than other ginger species, parts of the plant are sometimes used in local dishes or as a flavoring.

The plant thrives best in a warm, humid, tropical or subtropical climate. It is not winter hardy and cannot tolerate frost.
Kaempferia rotunda prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil that is slightly acidic to neutral.
The plant grows best in partial shade to shade, similar to its natural habitat under the canopy of tropical forests.

The plant needs regular watering to keep the soil moist but not soggy. During the dormant period (often in winter) it needs less water.
During the growing season the plant can benefit from a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth and flowering.
Pruning is usually not necessary, but dead leaves and flowers can be removed to keep the plant tidy.

The flowers of Kaempferia rotunda often appear before the leaves, which is a unique phenomenon in the plant world. This makes the plant extra special in gardens.
Like many other gingers, Kaempferia rotunda has a dormant period, usually in winter, during which the above-ground parts die back. The plant comes back to life in the spring.
