Vanilla planifolia – Bourbon Vanilla

Vanilla planifolia, also known as Bourbon Vanilla, is a tropical climbing orchid that produces the famous vanilla pods. This attractive exotic plant combines beautiful glossy green foliage with the possibility of producing your own vanilla pods under the right growing conditions.

The plant develops long, flexible vines with thick, glossy green leaves and aerial roots that allow it to attach itself to a support. Mature plants can produce attractive yellow-green flowers. To develop vanilla pods, the flowers must be successfully pollinated.

Care
Place the plant in a warm, bright location, protected from intense midday sun. Use an airy, well-draining substrate and keep it slightly moist. Avoid standing water. High humidity and a suitable climbing support are recommended. Apply a light fertiliser regularly during the growing season.

Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy. Protect from frost and preferably keep above 15°C. Ideal as an indoor, conservatory or greenhouse plant.
