Moderately hardy. -5°C is a safe guideline, though an established plant can tolerate lower temperatures under favorable conditions. In well-drained soil and with a thick layer of mulch, the underground rhizome is estimated to survive -10°C to possibly -15°C. Prolonged frost and wet winter soil particularly increase the risk. The foliage dies back during frost and resprouts in spring. When kept in a pot, overwintering in a frost-free environment is preferred.
