Origin

• Veitchia joannis (Joannis Palm) is endemic to Fiji
• Also found on the Tonga Islands.
• Grows as an upright palm in tropical rainforests, from sea level to about 600 m altitude, often in secondary forests or old village areas.
• It is a large, solitary palm.

Care

• Light: Full sun to partial shade; tolerates direct sunlight well if given enough water.
• Soil: Well-draining, moist, rich or sandy soil; add organic matter for better growth.
• Water: Keep the soil evenly moist; moderately drought-tolerant once established, but not suitable for prolonged drought.
• Climate: Tropical and subtropical (USDA 10b-11); can tolerate light frost but grows best in warm, humid conditions.
• General: Relatively fast-growing with good nutrition and water; ideal for containers as a young plant. Fertilize regularly with palm food for optimal growth.

Usage

• Very popular ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical gardens: as a solitary specimen, in groups, along roads, or in parks.
• Well-suited as a pot plant or container plant (especially when young) for patios and indoors.
• Traditional edible use: unripe seeds as a snack and young leaves/buds raw in salads.

This is one of the larger and more impressive Veitchia species with graceful, drooping leaves and a slender trunk. It is popular among palm collectors for its tropical look and relatively fast growth.
