Cyathea tomentosissima – Woolly Tree Fern

Cyathea tomentosissima is a remarkable, slow-growing tree fern native to the cool mountain forests of New Guinea. This exotic fern features elegant, finely divided green fronds and a distinctive trunk covered in reddish-brown, woolly hairs. A beautiful focal point for tropical gardens, patios or conservatories.

Hardiness: May tolerate brief, light frosts down to approximately -3 to -5°C but is not fully frost hardy. Frost-free overwintering is recommended, especially for young plants.

Position: Partial to full shade, sheltered from strong midday sun and drying winds.

Watering and care: Keep the soil consistently moist without waterlogging. Rainwater is preferred, and high humidity is beneficial. A humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil is ideal. Apply a small amount of liquid fertiliser regularly during the growing season.

Mature height: Can reach approximately 2 to 4 metres under favourable conditions.

Special features: This rare tree fern grows relatively slowly and adds a unique, lush tropical atmosphere to any sheltered location.
