Origin
- Dicksonia antarctica, also known as the Tasmanian tree fern or soft tree fern, is native to southeastern Australia.
- It is found in south-east Queensland through New South Wales and Victoria to Tasmania.
- The plant is endemic to Australia and thrives in humid, high-humidity environments such as cool mountain forests and areas with a lot of water.
Care
- This evergreen tree fern grows slowly to about 4–5 meters in height, with leaves (fronds) that can grow up to 2–3 meters long.
- Plant in humus-rich, well-drained soil in a warm, moist, shaded or semi-shaded spot. Avoid full sun to avoid leaf burn.
- Keep the plant constantly moist by watering regularly, especially wetting the trunk and crown well; Also, sprinkle mulch to keep the root zone cool and moist.
- The plant is fairly hardy in temperate climates (down to about -5 °C, sometimes down to -7/-10 °C with good protection), but in colder areas winter protection is needed, such as wrapping the trunk with straw, fleece or jute.
- In winter, keep the crown moist from time to time to prevent the trunk from drying out. Older brown leaves can be pruned away close to the trunk.
