Origin

• Native to the New World, from Mexico through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela and the West Indies.
• Naturally grows in moist tropical forests and tropical/subtropical areas at low to medium altitudes (usually 0–1600 m).

Care

• This fast-growing climber needs a sturdy support (trellis, pergola, fence or wall) and can grow several meters per season.
• Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun (depending on the climate), but in hot areas, light afternoon shade is better to prevent leaf scorch.
• Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged; good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
• Ideal soil: well-draining, humus-rich, slightly acidic to neutral garden soil with organic matter.
• Thrives best in warm, humid conditions (high humidity); ideal for tropical/subtropical climates or as a container plant in temperate zones.
• Hardiness: limited; the plant tolerates light frost (roots possibly down to about -5 °C), but above ground it often dies back at temperatures below zero; in colder regions, overwinter indoors as a container plant or provide protection.
• Fertilization: during the growing season (spring/summer), apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks, optionally supplemented with magnesium.
