Ruttya fruticosa ‘Yellow Dragon’ – Exotic climber

Native to the tropical regions of East Africa, Ruttya fruticosa ‘Yellow Dragon’ is a true eye-catcher in any interior. Due to the unique shape of its flowers, this climbing shrub is known worldwide as the Rabbit Ears or Hummingbird Plant. The flowers also produce a large amount of sweet nectar, creating a beautiful natural spectacle.

Because this variety has a natural climbing habit, the plant can easily be trained along a moss pole or a small trellis. Give it a warm, bright spot and it will reward you with a spectacular and long-lasting bloom that can continue almost year-round with the right indoor temperature.

Care and location

• Location: Place the plant in a very bright to sunny spot. Plenty of indirect or direct sunlight stimulates compact growth and abundant flowering.
• Watering: Keep the potting soil consistently slightly moist. Ensure good drainage in the pot (holes in the bottom) so that excess water drains away easily to prevent root rot.
• Temperature: As a tropical plant, it requires a minimum temperature of 15°C. During the summer months, the plant can be moved outside to a sheltered terrace, but bring it back indoors in September as soon as night temperatures drop below 10°C.
• Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer), apply a mild liquid plant fertilizer monthly to optimally support flowering.
• Pruning: Long vines can be trimmed back without issue after the main flowering period to maintain a full, bushy shape.
