Agave guadalajarana (also called Maguey Chato)
Origin
- Endemic to western Mexico, especially around Guadalajara in the state of Jalisco and near the Ceboruco volcano in Nayarit.
- It grows naturally on grassy slopes of rocky volcanic mountains, in oak and pine forests, on volcanic soil at 1,500-2,000 m altitude.
Care
- Location: full sun or light partial shade; Ideal for outdoors in dry gardens.
- Soil: very well-drained (cactus or succulent soil with 20% coarse sand or grit); Never use clay or moisture-retaining soil.
- Water: moderate to sparing – allow the soil to dry completely between waterings; Very drought resistant, almost no water in winter.
- Temperature: hardy to approx. -3 °C (USDA 9b-11) when the soil is dry; Protect from severe frost.
Usage
- Especially as an ornamental plant: perfect for rock gardens, xeriscapes, succulent gardens, pots on terraces or as an accent plant in dry/Mediterranean gardens.
