Description
The Jacaranda mimosifolia, also known as the jacaranda, is a striking tree that is best known for its beautiful purple flowers.
The jacaranda produces masses of purple, trumpet-shaped flowers that grow in clusters. Flowering usually occurs in spring and early summer, depending on the climate.
The leaves are pinnate and resemble those of a mimosa, hence the name “mimosifolia”. They are light green in color and give a delicate, fern-like appearance.
The tree can reach a height of 15 to 20 meters, with a wide, spreading crown.
The jacaranda is native to South America, especially in Argentina, Bolivia and Brazil.
Today, the tree is grown in many (sub)tropical areas around the world, including South Africa, Australia, California and parts of southern Europe.
The jacaranda thrives best in warm, temperate to subtropical climates. It is not hardy and cannot tolerate frost.
The tree prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil.
Full sun is ideal for optimal growth and flowering.
Young trees need regular watering, but once established, they are fairly drought tolerant.
Pruning is usually not necessary except to remove dead or damaged branches. Prune after flowering to maintain its shape.
