The vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia) is a climbing plant reaching up to 15 m, featuring finger-thick, fleshy stems and white aerial roots transformed into tendrils.

Today, the plant is cultivated in many tropical countries; outside of Mexico, it is primarily grown in Madagascar, Réunion, and the Comoros.

After saffron, vanilla is the most expensive spice in the world.
